Julia Korkman & Django Collective Helsinki
Julia Korkman is a forensic psychologist and singer, who has been singing both classical and popular music and whose first songs were French childrens’ songs while she grew up in Paris as a young child. She has performed in and co-produced several discs, of which the most well-known is “Kvar i mig” (Still within me), which she produced together with Claes Andersson and which was published in 2018. During that year, Korkman, Andersson and Pentti Mutikainen also performed at Baltic Jazz. Korkman performs regularly with different musicians and bands. French music retains a particular place in her heart.
Django Collective Helsinki is a group of skilled professional musicians sharing the love for the passion and expression of Gypsy Jazz music. The Collective started out in 2011 and has been performing at jazz festivals, clubs and private occasions frequently since then. They are specially popular for their welcoming and warm-hearted jam-concerts, which have become a phenomenon of sorts in Helsinki. The group plays romantic, traditional and good-humored Gypsy Swing in the styles on Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli from the 30-50’s. The group is also merging the traditional with modern, more creative qualities of jazz expression with its own original compositions, bringing into being the possible future for this type of music in a fresh way. Django Collective Helsinki has worked among others with Antti Sarpila, Paulus Schäfer, Olli Soikkeli, Sami Saari, Raoul Björkenheim, Pentti Lahti and Riku Niemi. Django Collective Helsinki consists of Laura Airola (violin), Aki Hauru, Kimmo Iltanen and Tomi Kettunen (guitars) and Joonas Tuuri (double bass).
