Baltic Gospel Singers was founded in the spring of 1994 with the idea of forming a choir that would bring swinging gospel music to The Jazz Church Service. The choir has primarily recruited singers from Kimitoön, but has also welcomed participants from further afield to share the joyful message of gospel. Today, Baltic Gospel Singers consists of around 30 choir members, accompanied by a seven-piece band.
Over the years, the choir has released four CDs and is led by conductors Jenni Engblom and Peter Södergård. Baltic Gospel Singers has toured widely across Finland, Åland and the Nordic countries, and has also performed in Estonia and St. Petersburg.
The Jazz Church Service – a long-standing collaboration between Baltic Jazz and the parish
The collaboration between the Baltic Jazz Festival and the former Dragsfjärd parish (now the Kimitoön parish) began in the early years of the festival. Such a collaboration is likely unique in jazz contexts. Over the years, numerous jazz ensembles as well as international jazz vocalists and musicians have participated in the services.
On Sunday 5 July at 10:30, the jazz service begins at Dalsbruk Church, with the introductory music performed by Antti Sarpila.
